Broom Hockey
Soon To Be An Olympic Event Maybe
ADDED February 25, 2010
For the remainder of this week, we are creating ideas to bring the Winter Olympics into your home. We are hoping to get everyone cheering for Team USA (and get everyone enjoying some time outside.)
Today's feature is "broom hockey," a simple game played with brooms and a round ball. No special gear is required, and you can play with just a few kids or the whole neighborhood.
Make your teams, set up the goals, and play. If scoring is important to the kids, follow the general rules of soccer.
The only other important rule, as far as we're concerned, is "brooms down." That is, the bottom of the broom has to be near -- or touching -- the ground at all times. If the "sweeping" part of the broom touches another player above the legs, that's a two-minute "sit out" penalty.
This game is also safe for adults, we've found, so Dad and Mom should get out there and have some fun! (We know you skipped the gym yesterday.)
